This weekend we rode in the Space Race. This was a bike ride down in LaMarque, TX to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. We were planning to ride the 80 mile route, but since it was wet most of the weekend we decided to ride the 60 mile route instead.
It was raining when we got to the start point, but we were there nearly 2 hours before the ride start. The ride was put on by the Space City Cycling Club, and they did an excellent job planning and supporting the ride.
Things were dry for the start, but we were about 15 miles into the ride and it started to rain. I was working as a ride marshal, so I got to stop and help several people. I stopped to help a rider with a flat and Vanessa and Sheldon kept riding. Little known to me, they decided to turn at the 40 mile turn off. Being behind them, I assumed that they planned on the riding 60 miles and kept heading toward the 60 turn around. About 5 miles from the rest stop, Vanessa calls and said they turned. :-(
Anyway, I headed back, and as I am about 10 miles from the finish, the sun came out, and the riding was beautiful. I got a flat with a mile to go. It was a good ride, and I finished with 48 miles.
